Working Together to Reduce Rat Activity in Our Community
Posted on May 18th, 2026

We want to make the community aware that several rat nests have recently been discovered within Fairlington Towne. While rodent activity can occur in any urban environment, there are important steps all residents can take to help prevent nesting and reduce attractants throughout the community.

The Association currently maintains rodent bait boxes throughout the common areas and will be installing additional boxes in the common areas where activity was identified in addition to removing any overgrown vegetation. However, successful prevention and treatment of these nests requires the cooperation and proactive efforts of ALL residents.

Please help by following these important prevention measures:

- Do not feed squirrels, birds, or other wildlife. Food left outdoors attracts rodents and encourages nesting nearby.
- Remove bird feeders and any seed and nuts or fruit left out for wildlife. Seed that falls to the ground becomes a major food source for rats and mice.
- Dispose of trash properly and avoid placing trash outside too early before collection days.
- Keep patios and limited common elements clean and free of food debris, standing water, dense storage, and clutter where rodents can hide.
- Store pet food indoors and do not leave food or water bowls outside overnight.
- Pick up after pets and properly stow and contain animal waste.
- Keep grills clean and remove grease buildup or food remnants after use.
- Avoid storing cardboard, firewood, or unused materials directly against fences or walls, as these create ideal nesting areas.
- Trim overgrown vegetation and shrubs that may provide shelter or pathways for rodents.

Please also remember that limited common elements, including patios, are the maintenance responsibility of the unit owner. Residents are expected to maintain these areas in a clean and sanitary condition to help minimize pest activity throughout the community.

Rodent control is most effective when the entire community works together. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep Fairlington Towne clean, safe, and well maintained. If you observe unusual rodent activity or have concerns about a specific area, please notify management.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
